Turing Trip to Floating Villages

From Bangkok to Kanchanaburi: Markets, Culture and New Discoveries

The next stage of our Turing Scheme adventure took us from the bustling streets of Bangkok to the beautiful province of Kanchanaburi, with plenty of memorable experiences along the way.

What began as an early morning departure quickly turned into a fascinating day of cultural discovery, local traditions and unforgettable sights as we travelled through rural Thailand.

Experiencing the Death Railway Market

Our first stop was the famous Death Railway Market, where local traders sell everything from fresh fruit and fish to clothing and souvenirs right alongside an active railway line.

The market provided a unique glimpse into everyday life, with stalls packed tightly against the tracks. The experience became even more exciting when a train passed through, requiring vendors and visitors to carefully make way before returning to business as usual moments later.

For our learners, it was a fascinating example of how communities adapt and thrive in unusual environments, while offering a chance to experience a truly authentic part of Thailand.

Learning at a Coconut Plantation

Next, we visited a local coconut plantation, where we learned just how versatile the coconut palm can be.

We discovered the traditional methods used to transform coconuts into a variety of products, including coconut sugar and coconut syrup. Learners also had the opportunity to sample coconut flower water and taste some of the products made on-site.

One of the most interesting aspects of the visit was seeing how virtually every part of the coconut tree is used. Coconut husks are transformed into bowls and decorative items, while branches are repurposed into brooms, furniture and other everyday products. The plantation showcased sustainable practices and highlighted the importance of making full use of natural resources.

Floating Markets and Local Life

Our journey also included a boat trip through Thailand’s famous waterways, offering another opportunity to see local life from a different perspective.

Travelling by boat enabled us to experience the floating market culture that has existed in Thailand for generations. Along the way, learners observed riverside homes, local businesses and communities that continue to rely on the waterways as part of everyday life.

These experiences provided valuable insight into the diverse ways people live and work around the world.

Encounters with Animals Along the Way

Throughout the day we encountered a variety of animals, both domestic and wild.

One particular highlight came during lunch, where friendly goats wandered freely around the grounds, much to the delight of our group. As the photos show, several learners took the opportunity to interact with them and enjoy an unexpected addition to the day’s activities.

We also encountered a Slow Loris during our travels. While some visitors viewed this as a special photo opportunity, it also sparked thoughtful conversations among our learners regarding wildlife welfare, conservation and ethical tourism. The differing perspectives prompted valuable discussions about how animals are cared for and the importance of responsible tourism when travelling abroad.

Time for Reflection

Amidst the busy itinerary, there were also opportunities for quiet reflection.

After lunch, some learners took time to pause and take in the stunning landscapes surrounding us, including views of mountains and Buddhist landmarks that form part of Thailand’s rich cultural heritage.

These quieter moments are an important part of the Turing Scheme experience, allowing learners to process new experiences, reflect on different cultures and appreciate the unique environment around them.

Arriving in Kanchanaburi

By the end of the day, we arrived at our second hotel in Kanchanaburi.

After a warm day of travelling and exploring, many of the group welcomed the chance to cool off in the hotel pool, relax and share stories from another action-packed day.

As we continue our journey through Thailand, each destination offers new opportunities to broaden horizons, build confidence and experience life beyond the classroom.

The adventure is far from over, and we’re excited to see what Kanchanaburi has in store next.
