What is nursery or pre-school childcare?
Early years – or pre-school – education involves working with under-fives in a nursery or home-based setting. It is a big social priority for Government because of the importance placed on quality childcare to help young children to succeed in later life.
There are different types of nurseries – private, school, community and voluntary – which provide care, education and play for children up to the age of five.
They offer part-time and full-time places for children and may also provide out of school care for five to 11-year-olds.
Pre-schools and playgroups provide care, and most provide early education for children aged two to five years. Many are organised by community or voluntary groups. They usually offer morning and/or afternoon sessions, often during term time only.
Early years settings deliver activities that help children develop their social and learning skills, which are a vital part of their development and preparation for full-time education and beyond.
We work in partnership with many early years settings and can help you find employment or a volunteer placement while you complete a qualification.

Early Years Academy Programme
Our Early Years Academy Programme is designed to identify and develop the next generation of pre-school education professionals.
It gives nursery and pre-school operators the opportunity to ‘Grow Your Own’ staff with the skills and experience they need to thrive within your education setting, whether that’s a school or a private nursery.
The programme is tailored to individuals looking for a career working with early years children in nurseries and pre-schools.
Candidates are taken through a fully funded and structured training programme.
Employers can work with academy students on a voluntary basis to help them monitor and mould potential employees with no obligation to employ.
You can observe how they perform in your workplace and ensure they would be a good fit with your business, your team and the children in your care before formally offering a job.
And if you have specific vacancies to fill, we can run a fully funded academy for your business designed to give candidates all the skills and knowledge required by your organisation.
Early Years Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are an excellent way for nursery and pre-school operators to recruit new staff. You can also use apprenticeships to upskill yourself and your existing employees with funded qualifications from Level 2 to Level 5.
Different organisations have different needs and work with different profiles of children. They also operate in a variety of socio-economic climates and have specific developmental targets and a distinctive ethos.
We’ve designed our accredited apprenticeship qualifications to meet the fast-changing environments in nurseries and pre-schools. We understand the day-to-day issues with staffing and ratios and can tailor apprenticeship frameworks to your needs.
