Turing Trip 2026 Reflections

Final Day at Little Caliphs: Reflection, Learning and Lasting Memories

As our placement at Little Caliphs Excellent Centre and Integrated Islamic School of Shah Alam came to an end, our learners enjoyed one final day filled with meaningful experiences, hands-on learning, and opportunities for reflection.

Developing Physical Skills Through Outdoor Learning

The day began with an exciting outdoor activity where the children took part in a physical obstacle course designed to develop their balance, coordination and confidence.

Our learners supported and encouraged the children as they carefully navigated balancing beams and completed a range of physical challenges. It was wonderful to see the children demonstrating determination, resilience and growing confidence as they worked their way through the course.

At the end of the activity, the children were presented with a fun problem-solving challenge. Hidden within trays of flour were wooden pieces that needed to be discovered, identified and sorted into categories. Working together, the children used their communication, cooperation and critical thinking skills to complete the task, showing how learning can be both educational and enjoyable.

Observing Prayer Time

One of the most memorable experiences of the day was joining the children during prayer time.

Our learners were given the opportunity to observe and participate respectfully in this important part of the school day. It was fascinating to see how focused and engaged the children were throughout the prayers and singing. Their ability to sit attentively, concentrate and participate with such enthusiasm was truly impressive.

This experience offered valuable insight into how faith and daily practice are woven into the educational environment, helping our learners develop a greater understanding of the role culture and religion play within schools in Malaysia.

Sharing Professional Perspectives

During lunch, our learners spent time with the class teachers reflecting on their experiences throughout the placement.

These discussions provided an excellent opportunity to compare and contrast approaches to education in the UK and Malaysia. Conversations explored curriculum design, teaching practices, educational policies and legislation, as well as the similarities and differences that shape daily life in schools and nurseries.

The exchange of ideas was incredibly valuable, highlighting that while educational systems may differ, there is a shared commitment to supporting children’s learning, wellbeing and development.

A Meaningful End to an Incredible Placement

As we said goodbye to the children and staff at Little Caliphs, there was a strong sense of appreciation for everything we had learned over the past week.

From supporting literacy and play-based learning to experiencing cultural traditions, prayer sessions and educational practices, the placement has provided our learners with invaluable professional and personal development opportunities.

The experience has strengthened their confidence, broadened their cultural awareness and given them a deeper understanding of early years education in a global context. Most importantly, it has created memories and friendships that will last long after our time in Malaysia comes to an end.

Thank you to everyone at Little Caliphs Excellent Centre and Integrated Islamic School of Shah Alam for making us feel so welcome and for sharing such an inspiring learning experience with us.
