Turing Scheme Gujarat to Udaipur

Exploring Education, Culture and Community in India

The first week of our Turing Scheme journey in India has provided an incredible opportunity for learners to explore the country’s rich culture while gaining valuable insight into its education system.

From visiting schools and engaging with pupils and teachers to experiencing local landmarks and travelling across the country, the week has been packed with learning experiences that have broadened perspectives and challenged assumptions.

Discovering India’s Diverse Education System

A major focus of the week has been visiting a variety of schools across Gujarat, where our learners have been welcomed into both pre-primary and primary classrooms.

These visits have provided a fascinating insight into the different approaches to education in India, allowing learners to observe lessons, interact with pupils and speak with teaching staff about their daily practice.

One of the most valuable aspects of the experience has been understanding how schools are funded and managed. Learners have explored the differences between government-funded schools and private schools, examining how funding models influence resources, curriculum delivery and educational provision.

These professional discussions have encouraged learners to compare educational systems and reflect on how schools in India and the UK share similar goals while operating in different contexts.

Joining Lessons and School Life

Rather than simply observing from the sidelines, learners have been actively involved in school life throughout the week.

They joined classroom lessons, engaged with pupils and experienced first-hand the enthusiasm and pride that many children have for their learning. Visits to both pre-primary and primary settings provided a well-rounded understanding of how education is delivered across different age groups.

One particularly memorable visit involved attending a special school assembly that celebrated teachers and recognised the important role they play in shaping young people’s lives.

The event gave learners a wonderful opportunity to experience the strong sense of community and respect that exists within many Indian schools. Colourful performances, songs and celebrations highlighted the value placed on education and those who deliver it.

Learning Through Cultural Exchange

The school visits were about much more than education policy and classroom practice.

Our learners had the opportunity to interact with children and teachers from different cultural backgrounds, helping to build confidence, communication skills and global awareness.

These exchanges encouraged meaningful conversations about daily life, learning experiences and aspirations, helping everyone involved gain a broader understanding of the world around them.

Experiences like these are at the heart of the Turing Scheme, enabling learners to develop both personally and professionally through international collaboration.

Exploring India’s Heritage

Alongside the educational visits, the group also spent time exploring some of the region’s cultural and historical landmarks.

One of the highlights was visiting a stunning historic Princess Bath (Stepwell), an architectural treasure that provided insight into India’s rich heritage and engineering ingenuity. The beautifully designed structure offered learners the opportunity to learn more about the country’s history while appreciating the craftsmanship and cultural significance of these remarkable sites.

These cultural experiences complement the educational placements, helping learners gain a deeper understanding of India’s traditions, history and communities.

Journey to Udaipur

As the first week drew to a close, it was time for the group to continue their adventure.

Travelling by train, learners made their way to the beautiful city of Udaipur, often known as the “City of Lakes”, where the second week of the Turing Scheme programme will begin.

The train journey provided another authentic experience of life in India and an opportunity to reflect on everything learned during the first week.

Looking Ahead

The first week has already delivered so many memorable experiences, from classroom observations and professional discussions to cultural celebrations and historic landmarks.

Most importantly, learners have developed a greater understanding of how education can vary across the world while recognising the shared commitment educators have to helping children learn and succeed.

As we begin week two in Udaipur, we look forward to discovering even more about India’s culture, communities and education system.
