A Weekend of Culture, Connection and Adventure in Malaysia and Singapore
After a rewarding first week in our school and orphanage placements, our learners enjoyed a well-deserved weekend of leisure, cultural exploration, and international friendship. The weekend provided an opportunity to reflect on everything they had learned so far while experiencing some of the region’s most iconic landmarks alongside a group of students visiting from a school in India.
Taking on the Malaysia Park Run
Saturday began bright and early as some of our learners and staff took part in the Malaysia Park Run. Despite the heat and humidity, everyone showed determination and resilience to complete the challenging 5K route.
The event was a fantastic way to start the weekend, promoting wellbeing, teamwork, and personal achievement. Running in a different country offered a unique experience and allowed participants to connect with local people and fellow international visitors. As the photos show, there were plenty of smiles at the finish line and a real sense of accomplishment among the group.
Exploring the Batu Caves
Later that day, we joined the students from India for a cultural visit to the world-famous Batu Caves, one of Malaysia’s most significant Hindu sites.
The breathtaking attraction is instantly recognisable thanks to the giant golden statue of Lord Murugan that stands at the entrance. Behind it rises the colourful staircase of 272 steps, leading visitors to the magnificent Cathedral Cave above.
The climb was certainly not without its challenges! Along the way, we encountered the resident wild macaques, who are well-known for snatching food, drinks, and belongings from unsuspecting visitors. Navigating the steep staircase whilst keeping an eye on the monkeys added an extra sense of adventure to the visit.
Reaching the top was well worth the effort. Inside the vast cave, learners were able to admire the beautiful Hindu shrines, intricate artwork, and incredible natural rock formations. The experience provided valuable insight into Malaysia’s rich cultural and religious diversity, encouraging learners to deepen their understanding of different beliefs and traditions.
Building International Friendships
A particularly special aspect of the weekend was the opportunity to spend time with students from India. Sharing experiences with young people from another country helped develop communication skills, cultural awareness, and new friendships.
Through conversations and shared activities, learners gained a greater appreciation of different perspectives while discovering the many similarities that connect young people across the world.
A Day Trip to Singapore
On Sunday, the international experience continued as we joined the Indian students for a bus trip to Singapore.
The day was packed with exciting sights and cultural experiences. We explored vibrant temples and the bustling streets of Chinatown, learning more about Singapore’s unique blend of cultures and heritage. The city’s impressive cleanliness, modern architecture, and multicultural atmosphere left a lasting impression on everyone.
As evening approached, the group visited the spectacular Gardens by the Bay, where we witnessed the famous light show beneath the towering Supertrees. The combination of music, colour, and stunning visual effects created a truly memorable end to the day and was a highlight for many of our learners.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
This weekend perfectly demonstrated the wider benefits of the Turing Scheme experience. Beyond placements and formal learning, our learners are developing confidence, independence, cultural awareness, and global friendships that will stay with them long after they return home.
From completing a 5K run in the Malaysian heat and climbing the famous Batu Caves stairs to exploring Singapore alongside new international friends, the weekend was filled with experiences that challenged, inspired, and broadened horizons. Refreshed and ready for the week of learning ahead!
