Our Thailand adventure continues, and what an incredible few days it has been!
On Thursday 30th, our learners had the opportunity to experience another side of Bangkok, exploring local markets, shopping centres, public transport and one of the city’s most famous districts, Chinatown.
Discovering Bangkok by River
The day began with a boat trip along Bangkok’s famous Chao Phraya River, giving us a fascinating glimpse into everyday life in Thailand’s capital city.
Travelling along the river allowed us to see how locals use the waterway as part of their daily routine, hopping on and off river taxis to travel to work, school and leisure activities. It was a great way to experience one of Bangkok’s busiest transport networks while taking in views of temples, traditional buildings and modern developments lining the riverbanks.
As shown in the photos, the river journey gave everyone a chance to relax, take in the scenery and appreciate the unique character of Bangkok from a different perspective.
Markets, Malls and Modern Bangkok
After exploring the waterways, we visited a local street market before continuing on to several of Bangkok’s impressive shopping centres.
One of the highlights was taking a river taxi to the spectacular ICONSIAM Mall, one of the largest and most luxurious shopping destinations in Thailand. The contrast between traditional markets and modern shopping complexes gave learners an insight into the diversity of Bangkok, where ancient culture and contemporary city life sit side by side.
Throughout the day, learners had the opportunity to explore local products, experience Thai retail culture and develop their confidence navigating a busy international city.
An Evening in Chinatown
As night fell, the group headed to Bangkok’s vibrant Chinatown, famous for its bustling streets, colourful neon signs and incredible food scene.
The illuminated streets were a feast for the senses, with bright signs, busy market stalls and food vendors lining every corner. The atmosphere was electric, and learners embraced the opportunity to immerse themselves in one of Bangkok’s most iconic districts.
For some members of the group, the evening included trying one of Thailand’s more adventurous street food offerings. Just before the rain arrived, a few brave participants, including Donna, sampled a fried scorpion prepared by a street vendor and served with a drizzle of soy sauce. It certainly wasn’t something everyone would choose to try, but it made for a memorable story and a true cultural experience!
Tuk-Tuks, Jazz and Monsoon Rains
The adventure didn’t stop there.
Some learners experienced the thrill of travelling through the city in a traditional tuk-tuk, while others relaxed in a local jazz bar, enjoying live music as Bangkok came alive after dark.
Then came the monsoon rain.
What started as a dry evening quickly turned into a tropical downpour. Despite getting completely drenched on the walk back to the meeting point, spirits remained high. In fact, the unexpected rain became one of the most memorable moments of the day, with plenty of laughter and shared stories as everyone embraced the experience.
Sometimes it’s those unplanned moments that create the best memories.
Learning Through Experience
These experiences are about much more than sightseeing. Every day brings new opportunities to develop independence, confidence, resilience and cultural awareness.
Whether navigating public transport, exploring new environments, trying unfamiliar foods or adapting to unexpected situations, our learners are gaining valuable skills that will stay with them long after they return home.
With Bangkok now explored, our next adventure takes us on the road to Kanchanaburi, where even more learning and cultural experiences await.
In a nutshell, we’re having an amazing time in Thailand, and we’re excited for what comes next!
