Do you have a university degree? Are you working in a school as a Teaching Assistant but want to become a teacher? This course is an apprenticeship for people who want to work as a teacher without having to go back to school. Through this apprenticeship you will achieve Qualified Teacher Status and will be eligible to apply for teaching jobs across the UK.
PGTA Role Profile
Qualified Teachers work in Primary, Special, and Secondary education across all age ranges. Teachers design and deliver well-structured lessons that are aligned with standards and the curriculum. They demonstrate good curriculum and subject knowledge while tailoring their teaching style and approach to the strengths and needs of each pupil. Teachers set high standards and expectations to challenge, motivate and inspire pupils and accelerate pupils’ progress and improve their outcomes. Teachers manage behaviour effectively to ensure a safe, nurturing and productive learning environment for all pupils.

Is this course right for me?
This course is for learners who have already completed a 2.2 bachelor’s degree or higher in any subject. It is suitable for someone working as a Teaching Assistant who would like to become a qualified teacher in a range of subjects including maths, physics, computing, chemistry, modern languages and primary years education. You can choose whether to specialise in early years, primary, or a specific subject at secondary level. This course is an alternative to a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) and is not for you if you already have Qualified Teaching Status (QTS). However if you hold an Early Years Teacher Status, you can upskill to obtain QTS through this apprenticeship.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
The course is delivered through a blended model which means a mix of:
- Workplace delivery (both face-to-face and online classrooms)
- Observations of your practice in your workplace by your assessor
- Mentoring support from your employer and other staff
- 1-2-1 support from your class tutor
- Regular group workshops, facilitated face to face and online
- Self-study to complete assignments set by your tutor
- Your employer must allocate 20% of the total time you are employed to enable you to progress on your apprenticeship training. This will support you to learn new knowledge, skills and behaviours under the supervision of an experienced employer
Funding eligibility and entry requirements
- Must be employed by a school
- You must be aged 21 or over, there is no upper age limit.
- British citizen or resident in the UK for at least 3 years with the right to work
- Hold a Grade C/4 or equivalent in GCSE English and Maths
- Hold a Grade C/4 GCSE in a Science subject if you intend to teach pupils aged 3 to 11
- Hold a 2.2 bachelor’s degree or higher (or equivalent) for entry to graduate Initial teacher training
Course completion
- All course work and practical observations as set by your tutor must be completed
- To complete you will need to pass an external “end point assessment”
- Your course will be graded pass or distinction
