Are you looking for a challenging but rewarding career within children’s services? This course is an apprenticeship for people who want to work in a children’s home. The programme will provide you with the knowledge, practical experience and wider skills needed to succeed in working with children and young people within their residential home.
Level 4 Children, Young People and Families Practitioner Role Profile
As a practitioner, you will work with children, young people, families, and carers to create positive, lasting changes in their lives. With a strong commitment to their well-being, you’ll assess and address their complex needs, agree on interventions or referrals, and use a respectful, curious approach to challenge and support them in achieving their potential while ensuring their safety. Collaborating with other professionals, you’ll share responsibility for improving outcomes, adapting your practice based on evidence and regular reflection. Whether in a children’s home, residential school, or secure setting, you’ll play a key role in supporting the child’s health, education, development and independence.

Is this course right for me?
This course is for you if you are interested in the field of children’s services, or if have some experience working in the children, young people and families sector to work primarily with children and young people in homes, residential schools or secure children’s homes. An apprenticeship is suited to someone who has the need and desire to learn new knowledge, skills and behaviours relevant to their role in residential childcare. You should be ready to thrive in a challenging work environment where you are facing children’s daily challenges head-on with them.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
The course is delivered through a blended model which means a mix of:
- Workplace delivery (both face-to-face and online classrooms)
- Observations of your practice in your workplace by your tutor
- Mentoring support from your employer and other staff
- 1-2-1 support from your tutor
- Regular group workshops, facilitated online
- Self-study to complete assignments set by your tutor
- Your manager must allocate 20% of the total time you are employed to enable you to progress on your apprenticeship training. This will support you to learn new knowledge, skills and behaviours under the supervision of an experienced employer.
Funding eligibility and entry requirements
- May be new to or employed in the children, young people and families sector
- You must be aged 18 or older, there is no upper age limit
- British citizen or resident in the UK for at least 3 years with the right to work
- No formal qualifications are required to start this course
- Must achieve an initial assessment pass in Maths and English level 1
Course completion
- All course work and practical observations as set by your tutor must be completed
- To complete you will need to pass an external “end point assessment” which includes observation of practice and a competence interview informed by a portfolio
- Your course will be graded pass, or distinction
