Day 3 in Malaysia: Turing Scheme 2026

Day 3: Gaining Global Perspectives on Child Welfare

Day 3 of our Turing Scheme trip to Malaysia provided a truly meaningful and insightful experience for our learners, as we shifted our focus towards understanding global approaches to child welfare and residential care.

Today we went to the MAHSA International School where Leah and Megan spent time working with the early years children, supporting them to prepare for a show about the seasons that will be performed at the upcoming graduation.  Zakar and Anastasia worked with the secondary school children in the ITC and Art departments where students demonstrated their excellent creative skills.

Visit to the Yayasan Sunbeams Home

In the afternoon, we had the privilege of visiting Yayasan Sunbeams Home, where we were warmly welcomed by staff who are dedicated to supporting children and young people in their care. This visit offered a unique opportunity to step beyond the classroom and gain a real-world understanding of how child welfare systems operate in a different cultural and national context.

During our time at the home, we engaged in informative discussions with staff about the key differences between children’s residential care in Malaysia and the UK. Learners explored how cultural values, government policies, and available resources can shape approaches to care, safeguarding, and support. These conversations encouraged critical thinking and helped learners develop a broader, more global perspective on an important sector.

As shown in the photos, our group had the chance to meet with staff and professionals in a welcoming environment, creating space for meaningful dialogue and knowledge-sharing.

Learning Through Real-Life Experience

The visit highlighted how theory connects with practice. Learners were able to reflect on topics such as:

  • Safeguarding and child protection

  • The role of community and family in care systems

  • Differences in policy, funding, and provision

This hands-on learning experience reinforced the value of international placements in developing a deeper, more informed understanding of social care practices.

Connecting with the Children

One of the most memorable moments of the day was meeting some of the children supported by Yayasan Sunbeams. They were incredibly welcoming and eager to engage with our learners, both during lesson time and in more relaxed, informal activities after school.

These interactions, captured in our photos, were filled with smiles, conversation, and shared experiences. Learners had the opportunity to build connections, practise communication skills, and experience the universal importance of play, learning, and friendship.

A Day of Reflection and Growth

Day three was not only educational but also deeply impactful on a personal level. It encouraged learners to reflect on their own perspectives, challenge assumptions, and develop empathy and cultural awareness.

Experiences like this are at the heart of the Turing Scheme. They provide opportunities to learn beyond borders, engage with different communities, and build the skills needed to thrive in a global society.

Stay tuned for more learning incites over the next days to come!
