Becoming a teacher is not a one step process. There is a lot of training and education involved before you’re a qualified teacher. It’s not an easy career to choose and not one that can be made for the wrong reasons. Teachers need to be passionate, dedicated and enthusiastic. Becoming a teacher is not just a job, it is much more than that.
When someone makes the decision to get into teaching, it’s the start of a long but rewarding journey. Whilst some people decide to cater their degree choices around becoming a teacher, many don’t make the decision until after university is completed.
There are multiple options for both into how to become a teacher, but the bottom line is you should only become a teacher if you passionately want to.
Where do you start?
If you want to become a teacher, there are many varied routes into it. We’re going to talk about becoming a teacher via an apprenticeship.
The apprenticeship route is one of the most ideal ways to get into teaching. For your professional development, you get to put theory into practise by working in a school from day 1. You’ll be able to see how the things you learn work in a school as well as gauge children’s reactions to it.
It gives you a real understanding of different methods of teaching, providing you with ideas and lesson plans you weren’t expecting to love.
Can anyone afford it?
For your personal life, although you would be expected to complete your assignments in a timely fashion, you’d be doing this alongside having a full-time job with a wage. You’d be finishing your course with Qualified Teaching Status and be extremely confident in your teaching ability, as well as having a personal relationship with the school. And you’d have 0 student loans.
So whilst technically anyone could become a teacher – we’re firm believers that education should be open to all – to become a good teacher requires passion, dedication and a commitment to improving outcomes for children.
