After a long journey, our Turing Scheme group arrived safely in Bangkok, Thailand, ready to begin what promises to be an unforgettable 14-day international learning experience.
While everyone was understandably a little tired after the flights, excitement quickly took over as we looked ahead to an incredible itinerary filled with cultural discovery, new experiences, and opportunities to learn from a completely different environment.
The group has already bonded well, and it is clear that we have a fantastic mix of learners who are ready to embrace every opportunity that comes their way over the next two weeks.
A Warm Welcome and Riverside Dinner
Our second evening in Thailand was the perfect introduction to Bangkok’s vibrant atmosphere. Joined by our local leader, Heart, we headed out for our first meal together as a group.
Set alongside the river, we enjoyed a beautiful sunset while sharing dinner family-style, allowing everyone to sample a variety of authentic Thai dishes. The relaxed setting gave learners the chance to get to know one another better while experiencing the famous flavours of Thailand for the very first time.
As the sun set over the water, it was easy to see why Bangkok is regarded as one of Southeast Asia’s most captivating cities. The evening provided the perfect opportunity to reflect on the journey so far and build excitement for the days ahead.
Exploring Bangkok’s Magnificent Temples
Our first full day began with a visit to some of Bangkok’s most iconic and historic temples.
One of the highlights was seeing the famous Reclining Buddha, an impressive sight that showcases the beauty, craftsmanship, and spiritual significance of Thailand’s Buddhist heritage. Surrounded by ornate architecture, golden statues, and intricate decorative details, learners were given a fascinating insight into Thailand’s history, culture, and traditions.
The group also explored several other temple complexes, taking in the stunning golden spires and beautifully decorated buildings that make Bangkok’s religious landmarks so distinctive.
The photographs capture the scale and grandeur of these remarkable locations, with our learners standing amongst some of Thailand’s most treasured cultural sites.
Witnessing a Special Royal Occasion
Our visit coincided with a particularly special day in Thailand.
Although we were unable to see the famous Emerald Buddha, as access was restricted while preparations were being made for the seasonal change of attire associated with the rainy season, we were fortunate enough to witness a unique and memorable event.
As it was the King’s birthday, we had the privilege of seeing local children perform and recite a poem, alongside appearances from senior government representatives, including the Prime Minister. Experiencing these celebrations first-hand provided a rare insight into the respect and significance attached to the Thai monarchy and national traditions.
For many learners, this unexpected experience became one of the most memorable parts of the day.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
These first few days have already demonstrated the value of international travel and cultural exchange. From sharing meals and building friendships to exploring historic landmarks and witnessing important cultural events, learners are developing a deeper understanding of the world around them.
The journey is only just beginning, but Thailand has already provided an inspiring introduction to a rich and diverse culture. We can’t wait to see what the next 14 days have in store.
